why did the photographer carefully place the shoes inside the square? -j.
Maybe the photographer wanted to express the confinement of her own heart. Or, if you haven’t noticed, the gold flats are closer to the edge than the crocs. Perhaps she feels the need to move out of her confinement but is uneasy about it. And, who says the gold flats didn’t just return from outside the square after realizing that there really isn’t much to life “outside the box” after all? How about the crocs? Could they symbolize her younger self happily situated in her given circumstance, and her adult self retreats to her younger self as a source of comfort when life’s journey encounters bumps along the way? And what about the other squares? Why are they all empty? Could it be that all those other shoes have made their ways out of the squares only to end up in someone else’s old square? After years of encountering recycled ideologies, philosophies, and living the way of life of others no matter how “novel” or “refreshing” they seemed at the time, maybe they never found the peace they sought for out of the square and in the end, all died? Therefore, can it be concluded that Goldie is on the verge of tracing their footsteps to death and the only force holding her back is her childlike innocence, hence the pink crocs? Yet… maybe, just maybe it wasn’t premeditated at all that those shoes were photographed within the square… or the confines of her heart. Maybe they were strategically placed in the square out of pure boredom one night.
